Marmosets are fascinating little creatures best known as gum feeders. In the wild, they use their sharp teeth to gnaw holes in tree bark to access the sap and gum underneath. Because of this natural behavior, it’s important to provide your marmoset with plenty of branches and wood to chew on. This kind of enrichment is essential since they spend about a third of their day doing just that.
Different species of marmosets live across tropical forests along Brazil’s Atlantic coast and in the rainforests south of the Amazon River. New species have been discovered as recently as the 1990s, with some still awaiting scientific description. These species vary a lot in color and even in the amount of fur on their ears. Their specialized teeth—including sharp canine teeth and long lower incisors—are perfectly designed to gnaw tree bark and create notches where sap flows for them to feed on.
One important thing most people don’t realize is that many adult humans carry certain viruses that can be dormant but still transmitted to marmosets. This is why proper hygiene and health precautions are critical when caring for these little primates.
If you’re looking for a pet for emotional support or therapy, marmosets probably aren’t the best choice. Unlike dogs, they don’t offer the same kind of comfort or companionship as emotional support animals. Marmosets are small, active, and have very specific care needs.
Historically, pygmy marmosets were very difficult to obtain, but recently, their popularity among exotic pet lovers has grown, and it’s become easier to find them through reputable breeders and stores like ours.
Marmosets communicate using a wide range of vocalizations. Their high-pitched screams are common, especially when they’re irritated or uncomfortable—so be prepared if you have visitors! They are social, active during the day, and live in small family groups. Their gestation period ranges from 4 to 6 months depending on the species, with twins being the most common birth type.
People have kept marmosets as pets since the early 1600s, but they do require expert care to stay healthy. Marmosets need serious training and handling experience. Without proper knowledge, they can be very challenging to care for, which is why many breeders hand-raise their babies to help develop tamer, more domesticated pets.
Because they have high metabolisms, finger monkeys need to eat frequently but in small amounts. Offering small portions of biscuits, fresh fruit pieces, and other treats spread around their enclosure once or twice daily works well to keep them happy and healthy.
